EDWARD GOREY (1925-2000)
"Another Nineteenth-Century Moment Musical." Possibly published in Look magazine, 1970s. Pen and ink on stiff paper. 127x183 mm; 5x7 1/4 inches, on 9x7 1/2-inch board, being the recto of a remnant of blueprint proof for Gorey and Ennis Rees's "Fables from Aesop" (1971). Unsigned.

Condition notes:
Heavy line of matte burn in ½-inch circumference around Gorey's inked margin. Overall mild and fairly even toning to paper. Ghost of a graphite figure in the far right image of pall bearers picture on wall. Nice, heavy inking noticeable in raking light across composers' garments. Rear contains remants of cellotape marks on four sides and the penciled note "up front" likely referring to the printing of the Ennis book.
The full caption reads "Another Nineteenth-Century Moment Musical: Hector (Berlioz) in Despair, retrieved by Liszt, Mendelssohn and Chopin. At the keyboards, Beethoven listened to by Schumann, Wagner listened to by Brahms and Tchaikovsky. The ladies: Mme Strauss (Johann the younger) with fan, Marie Pleyel with Cigar."
A fun piece that reflects Gorey's connection to the world of classical music, thriftily drawn on the verso of a discarded proof.
