"I knew they could be nothing less than gods of the sky!" Original "Tailspin Tommy" Sunday comic by Glenn Chaffin and Hal Forrest, published November 22, 1931. Pen, ink, and watercolor over graphite on Bristol board. 739x557 mm; 29x21 3/4 inches, on 29 1/4x22 3/4-inch board. Signed "Hal Forrest" in last panel, dated in graphite in left margin. Adhered to backing board.
This early hand-colored Sunday comic is numbered #110, and as The Comic Art Price Guide by Jerry Weist notes, "only the first 150 Sunday pages are hand-colored by creator Hal Forrest."
Condition:
Dated in graphite in left margin with other scattered markings and registration marks in margins. Small ¼-inch tear on left edge, which creeps into 5th panel. Some texturing in first panel (above "Progress" and within "persevered"). Eighth panel has "blue" written in blue pencil within image area. Small nick to right edge next to 7th panel, which does not affect image area. Scattered discolorations and spotting throughout panels, especially at corners, first panel, and in bottom row of panels. Pin holes in margins. Mounted to board with tape.
