Family Tree. Cover illustration for The New Yorker, published February 12, 1938. Watercolor and gouache over graphite on board. 350x255 mm; 13 3/4x10 inches, on 16x12 1/2-inch board. Signed "Alajalov" in lower right image. Matted and framed together with a tear sheet of the printed cover.
Condition:
Board is evenly toned within matted image area. When taken out of matte, toning and matte burn are visible, including a faint line along inner edge of red band at left. Graphite indications and numericcal notations in margins. Some graphite ghosting. Tear sheet and artwork are taped to matte with archival tape. Verso of artwork has border of old tape and New Yorker inventory number written in blue. Note that red band at left is covered by matte when framed. Tear sheet has ½-inch tear at lower center with some discolorations along edges.
