First English edition, large quarto, illustrated with folding frontispiece map, of the interior of Louisiana with part of New Mexico, and a full-page engraved map of the Mississippi River, with the half-title, two preliminary leaves torn and mended, spotting to contents, bound in old half leather, rebacked, old spine flaking away, marbled paper-covered boards quite worn, 10 1/2 x 8 in.

Pike has an engaging style whose work brims with important details and vivid descriptions. He was dispatched under the authority of Thomas Jefferson on several expeditions, and Pikes Peak was named in his honor.
