Mackenzie, Sir Alexander (1764-1820)
Voyages from Montreal, on the River St. Laurence, through the Continent of North America to the Frozen and Pacific Oceans.
London: for T. Cadell Jun., and W. Davies, et al., 1801.
First edition, large quarto, half-title, engraved portrait frontispiece, illustrated with three large folding engraved maps (one with hand-outlining), uncut, in marbled paper boards, rebacked with period-correct paper spine, in custom leather box, 11 1/2 x 9 in.
Hill (2004) 1063; Howes M133; Sabin 43414.
Mackenzie's expedition preceded that of Lewis and Clark by twelve years, and served as a source of inspiration for the latter two, ever in search of the elusive Northwest Passage to the Pacific. The river that conducted Mackenzie in that direction, and empties into the Arctic Ocean, now bears his name.
