Allen Ginsberg Reads Howl & Other Poems at the Co Existence Bagel Shop At Grant & Green.
870x600 mm, 33 1/4x23 1/2 inches. Circa 1960s.
San Francisco's Co Existence Bagel Shop was not a bakery of any sort, but rather a seminal North Beach, Beat coffee shop, bar, performances space and hangout. The image is taken from Richard Avedon's 1963 portrait of Ginsberg, "Allen Ginsberg, Poet, " yet the coffee shop closed down in 1960. Combine that with the fact that there is no date mentioned for Ginsberg's performance suggests that this image was fabricated later in the decade as a Beat-era poster celebrating legends which never actually crossed paths.
Condition B: tears, creases and minor separation along vertical and horizontal folds, abrasions in image. Mounted on board. Framed.
