Woodward, Joseph Janvier (1833-1884) Seven Photo-micrographic Albumen Prints. Images on photo paper mounted on publisher's card mounts, imprint and title printed on the mount in light brown ink, each identified by hand in dark brown ink, depicting Pleurosigma Angulatum, an ocean-floating genus of marine planktonic organisms or diatoms, maginfied to show its hexagonal structure (two images); and Amphipleura Pellucida, another similarly-shaped diatom (five images); some bowing to the mounts, generally good, with notes in pencil and pen dated September, 1879, 14 x 11 in. (7) Washington, D.C.: War Department, Surgeon General's Office, Army Medical Museum, 1879.
Diatoms are algaes within tiny and unusual exteriors; they are the only known organism whose cell walls are composed of transparent opaline silica, structured in intricate vented and fluted designs. J.J. Woodward was a Civil War surgeon and microscopist, known as a pioneer in photo-microscopy. He also performed autopsies on both Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth.
