Shackleton, Ernest (1874-1922) and Robert F. Scott (1868-1912) South Polar Times. Three large quarto volumes, first and second volume with original dust jackets, printed in color throughout, a facsimile of the original series created by the National Antarctic Expedition led by Scott: the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) and the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913); each bound in publisher's full blue textured cloth with inset chromolithographic illustrations; volume three rubbed, 11 x 8 in. London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1907-1914.
First limited edition, volumes one and two numbered 132, volume three numbered 9 of an edition of 250. The South Polar Times was conceived to keep the crew's spirits afloat when weather precluded exploration. They were encouraged to contribute paintings, photographs, weather reports, cartoons, essays, and scientific observations. The twelve issues were originally produced in one copy only. Scott perished in pursuit of the Pole during the 1912 expedition.
