Elcano, Juan Sebastián (c. 1476-1526) Manuscript Transcription of his Will, Copia de Testamento. Folio format Spanish language manuscript on laid paper, six leaves, inscribed over eleven pages, text in a secretarial hand, in brown ink, single column, approximately thirty lines per page, single signature with added outer bifolium cover, housed in a custom folder with an engraved portrait of Elcano on the front board, 12 1/4 x 8 1/2 in. Madrid, 1788.
Basque-born Elcano was one of only seventeen European survivors of Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe. Magellan was not so lucky. Elcano took command of the only ship to return to Spain in the Moluccas in November of 1521. He commanded the Victoria and its crew of twenty-one (from 240) survivors into the port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cadiz on 6 September 1522.
