Perottus, Nicolaus [aka Niccolò Perotti] (1429-1480) Rudimenta Grammatices. Quarto, a2-8, b-u8, x6 (lacking a1, and x7 & x8); woodcut initials in text, printed in roman letter, single column throughout; initials rubricated, likely by a reader, who has also left marginal annotations and ten or so creative and well-drawn manicules; bound in later limp parchment; wormed throughout, 8 x 5 3/4 in. Rome: Stephan Plannck, 1493.
Perotti's essential contribution to Italian humanism is here, in the form of the first modern Latin manual for students. The Rudimenta Grammatices was well-used by Renaissance scholars, as evidenced by the many notes and doodles in the present copy. A best-selling incunabula, it went through more than 100 printings and is thought to have sold more than 50,000 copies. Erasmus called Perotti's work, "accurate, yet not pedantic."
