Carta Executoria de Hidalguía, Spain, Illuminated Manuscript on Parchment. Folio-format manuscript, seventy-eight leaves, bestowing the noble status of hidalgo (a minor title that exempts the bearer from taxation) upon the brothers Francisco, Rodrigo, and Antón Bayón of Valladolid; illustrated with three hand-painted illuminated miniatures, viz., the first two pages depicting members of the Bayón family on their knees beneath Mary and Jesus, with fully illuminated borders, and another similar leaf in which the Bayón's supplicate themselves to God the Father, the final painting depicts Phillip II, pages ruled in red throughout, text in a rounded secretarial hand and occasional three- and four-line calligraphic headings on dark red and blue grounds with text in gold; the two signatures stitched and secured with a plaited multi-colored tassel, 12 x 8.5 in. Valladolid, Spain, 1576.
