Antoninus Florentinus (1389-1459) Confessionale Domini Anthonini. Quarto, a-s8, text printed in two columns, gothic type throughout, capital spaces left blank, bound in contemporary calf over oak boards, tooled in blind, formerly a chained binding, with rusty hole at the top of the back board; with 12th century musical manuscript pastedowns in front and back; boards detached, covering material torn, 17th century rebacking which has failed; with significant dampstaining throughout, affecting first and last few leaves most substantially, with softened paper and loss; a good candidate for restoration; 8 x 5 1/4 in. [Speyer: Peter Drach], 30 June 1487.
Antoninus's manual for the confessor includes a description of the seven deadly sins, and offers advice on how a priest should question his parishioners, and how to determine the appropriate penance. The text was printed more than 100 times before 1500.
