254 •(SOUTHEAST ASIA--EMILE GSELL) Album with approximately 48 rare photographs, most are medium-format, with a few of Jules Yuillez posing amidst exotic settings, views of Saigon, Cambodia, as well as unidentified locations.
Several of the photographs have a performative quality and specifically refer to, and document, a pith-helmeted Yuillez's domestic, touristic, and professional adventures. With accomplished views by a commercial photographer of scenes that were, apparently, meaningful to the subject, including Yuillez in various Saigon locales and a scene in which he is hunting rhinoceros, in addition to architectural views, studies of playful elephants, a studio portrait of Cambodian warriors attributed to Emile Gsell, local modes of transportation, beautifully composed river views, and more. Albumen prints, the images measuring 4¼x8<AF5/8> to 8½x11 inches (10.8x21.8 to 21.6x28 cm.), and the reverse, mounted recto/verso, most of the prints with handwritten captions, in French.
