HENRY CLAY (1777-1852)
Half-plate daguerreotype of the American
statesman Henry Clay, the founder and
leader of the Whig Party.
In a leather case (separated at hinge). 1850
[1,200/1,800]
Clay was known as “The Great Compromiser”
because of his success in brokering agreements
on the slavery issue. Although his multiple
attempts at the presidency failed, he defined
the issues of the Second Party system. In 1957
a Senate committee chaired by a young John
F. Kennedy named Clay as one of the five
greatest senators in American history.

SOUTHWORTH & HAWES
(1843-1863)
Assemblage with 2 daguerreotypes, com-
prising a quarter-plate of L. Nobb, the
Mayor of Boston, and a whole-plate of a
framed proclamation.
The Mayor is seated in a Southworth & Hawes
chair and the proclamation also appears on the
wall behind him.The document was issued by
the Major and Alderman of Boston, England to
the Mayor and Common Council of Boston,
Massachusetts. In a sealed contemporary frame
measuring 17x10 inches (43.2x24.5 cm.); a
printed transcript of the proclamation is on
the obverse of the frame. Circa 1855
