Provenance: private collection, Oregon.

This Cubist composition is a scarce, early painting by Dan Concholar, a Californian painter,

printmaker, educator and gallery director. Born in San Antonio, Concholar moved to Los Angeles

while in high school, and later enrolled at the Otis Art Institute.There he took classes with Charles

White, and befriended David Hammons and Timothy Washington. Also a contemporary of John

Outterbridge and John T. Riddle, Jr., they all showed at Alonzo and Dale Davis’ Brockman Gallery

in 1970-71. Concholar also exhibited at Gallery 32 and Ankrum Gallery, as an art instructor at the

Watts Tower art center and a member of the Black Arts Council.

Concholar’s art and a time capsule-like suitcase of his were included in the important 2011-12

traveling museum exhibition
