434 MAX BECKMANN

Prinzessin Ursula von Bärwalde in Trauer den

König Jerum

.

Drypoint, 1923. 196x151 mm; 7

/

8

x6 inches,

full margins. Edition of 220. Signed in

pencil, lower right. Printed by Fritz Voigt,

Berlin. Published by Fritz Gurlitt, Berlin.

From

Fanferlieschen Schönefüsschen

. A superb

impression of this extremely scarce print.

According to Hofmaier, very few examples

of this work—illustrating fairy tales by the

German Romantic author Clemens Bretano

(1778-1842)—are known. Presumably some

were lost and destroyed in the war, Hofmaier

further believes that Beckmann was unhappy

with the publication in general and blocked

its release.

We have found only 3 other impressions at

auction in the past 30 years. Hofmaier 298.
