HIS SELF-JUSTIFYING BOOK:“WILL DOUBTLESS

ENCOUNTERVIOLENT ASSAULTS”

99

BUCHANAN, JAMES. Autograph Letter Signed, to his publishers D. Appleton &

Company (“Gentlemen”), alerting them that he would send the manuscript of his book

and requesting suggestions for a title. 1 page, small 4to; three punctures at middle left and

center and right (without loss), folds, docketing verso. (TFC)

Wheatland, 29 June 1865

[700/1,000]

Mr. Cooper will forward to you to day by Adam’s Express my historical work, except about

forty pages at the conclusion & a brief preface not yet prepared. I am at a loss to know by what

name to call it. Perhaps you can assist me in the baptism. It will doubtless encounter violent

assaults; but the facts on which it is founded are so well authenticated that it is impossible to

deny them with truth.”

The publication of his book,

Mr. Buchanan’s Administration on the Eve of the

Rebellion

, in January of 1866, did little to improve the generally-held negative appraisal of

Buchanan’s presidency.
