A rare whole year of this remarkable little anti-

slavery publication. The Friend was aimed at

children, but contained some surprising articles.

“The Bowie Knife” for example with its his-

tory, and a feature article on the murder of

Elijah Lovejoy and the burning of his press in

Alton. Illustrations include a silhouette portrait

engraving of Lovejoy.

A very nice run of these anti-slavery almanacs,

covering nearly a decade in the struggle to erad-

icate slavery in the United States. While these

almanacs come from two different groups, they

often shared the same illustrations and articles.

Key events, such as the burning of Elijah

Lovejoy’s printing press and the accounts of

runaway slaves, are found in the almanacs.
