Beatrice Szanton (1908-1993) was the wife of

the cartoonist Barney Tobey, whom she had met

in high school.After a brief career in Hollywood,

she attended art school and used her maiden

name to avoid confusion with her prolific hus-

band. Between 1959 and 1969 she contributed

11 covers toThe NewYorker.
