York City. The first, to the NY State Legislature, a petition of the Mayor Aldermen and

Commonalty of NY, appealing for help with meeting the rising cost of maintaining the

city’s alms house, enclosing a report [see second document]. Countersigned by Robert

text, small holes at intersections, short closed separations at folds. The second, partly-

printed, estimating the costs and condition of the alms house. 1 page, folio; backed, minor

scattered chipping at edges, toning at folds and along right edge. (MRS)

The report: “. . .With respect to the number of paupers under our care—we have now on our

books 740 . . . consisting of 404 adults, and 336 children, mostly under nine years of age.—It

is remarkable, that of the above number of adults, only 96 of them were born in this City and

County. . . .”
