Puebla: Colegio Real de San Ignacio, 1766

[4,000/6,000]

Possibly the first edition of a Zapotec catechism. The book’s preliminaries are dated in Oaxaca

in 1732. Medina discusses an alleged 1732 Oaxaca edition, but doubts its existence; no copies

are presently known. This 1766 edition is not recorded in Palau or in Medina’s Pueblo. Its

imprint line notes that it is “reimpresso.” OCLC lists a single incomplete copy at the John

Carter Brown Library with only 26 pages plus the preliminaries found here. The 1776 edition

is usually called the second edition, and is less scarce.
