(MEXICO—1788.) Larrañaga, Bruno Francisco.

Prospecto de una eneida

apostólica ô epopeya que celebra . . . Fr. Antonio Margil de Jesus: intitulada

Margileida.

[4], 28 pages. 4to, disbound; a few leaves toned.

México: Herederos de Joseph de Jáuregui, 1788

[1,000/1,500]

The prospectus for a biography of Antonio Margil de Jesús (1657-1726), a Franciscan

missionary who established three early missions in Texas.Though Margil’s canonization by the

Vatican is still pending, he is still sometimes referred to as “The Patron Saint of Texas.”

Larrañaga began work on a three-volume biography of Margil, to be titled Margileida.

However, this prospectus was harshly criticized in the Gazeta, forcing Larrañaga to issue

“Apologia por la Margileida” the following year. The Margileida never did make it to press, so

this extensive prospectus (featuring extensive extracts) is all that survives of his project. Medina,
