x33 inches.
Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, Florida. This is only the second
significant collage by Al Loving from the 1970s to come to auction - the previous collage, from the
same private collection, was sold at auction at Swann Galleries on October 3, 2013.
This large collage is a densely woven composition of strips of paper that are painted with soft tones
from an aerosol spray. After showing work from this series of collage in his second solo exhibition
at Fischbach Gallery, Loving had his first retrospective at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1977.
Another 1976 collage,
Shelly, Fran, Susie and Andrea
, is in the collection of the Studio Museum in
Harlem, and was recently included in the museum’s exhibition,
Brothers and Sisters
.
