This is an early painting by an artist who is known today for his mixed media assemblages and
puppetry performances. A native of Washington, DC, Schroeder Cherry earned a bachelor of arts
degree in painting and puppetry from the University of Michigan, a masters degree in museum
education fromThe GeorgeWashington University in 1978 and a doctorate in museum education
from Columbia University. Cherry today is an adjunct professor in the Morgan State University
Museum Studies Program. He has exhibited at the Schomburg Center for Research and Black
Culture, the Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture and the
James E. Lewis Museum of Art, Morgan State University.
