PARIS TO NEW YORK
PHOTOGRAPHS FROM AN
IMPORTANT AMERICAN COLLECTOR
LOTS 236-261
Collecting is a habit, sometimes a way of life, and this important Private American
Collection was part of the everyday life of the collector and her family for more
than twenty-five years. The collection was assembled with singular determination
and passion, where “buy what you love” became the driving mechanism of
acquisition. Over the course of more than two decades, works by master
photographers — Brassaï, Frank, Abbott, Bravo, Kertész-were cherished along
with great photographs by lesser-known image-makers, forming unusual, compelling
dialogues and juxtapositions.
New York City imagery and industrial visual idioms formed the early foundations of
the collection. Later, with a growing family, images of children and love dominated.
Attracted to both the light-hearted beauty of images made of lovers such as
Le
Baiser de l’Hotel de Ville
, and more open-ended, questioning visions of America (like
Robert Frank's
Political Rally
, or his gritty
Bar, Gallup, New Mexico
), this collection
draws from the many aspects of humanity. A deepening relationship and dialogue
with photography led to a collection that is both personal and universal.
