In 1952 Kertész and his wife moved to a 12th floor apartment on Fifth

Avenue overlooking NewYork’sWashington Square Park. From this vantage

point, the photographer made numerous images of the park, including this

elegant bird’s eye portrayal of the curved pathways, ghostly snow tracks,

and leafless trees. The stark contrast between the dark silhouettes of the

trees and the apparently newly-fallen snow renders this scene somewhat

abstract, but Kertész’s seemingly careful inclusion of two lone figures in

midstride remind the viewer of the city beyond and the quiet solitude of a

winter day.
