“Coaching Day,” held annually on the last Saturday in May, was the New York Coaching Club’s
grand parade along Fifth Avenue. New York City’s wealthy and fashionable leisure class of the late
19th Century would form in front of the Brunswick Hotel in brilliantly decorated four-in-hand tally-
ho coaches. With the president of the club leading, they moved up Fifth Avenue to 59th Street,
through Central Park to Mt. St.Vincent, returning to the Avenue and down to Washington Square,
before driving back to the Brunswick for the club’s annual dinner”—The NewYork Coaching Club,
