Beatrice Szanton (1908-1993) was the wife of
the cartoonist Barney Tobey, whom she had met
in high school. After a brief career in Hollywood,
she attended art school and used her maiden
name to avoid confusion with her prolific hus-
band. Between 1959 and 1969 she contributed
11 covers toThe NewYorker.
