RUBE GOLDBERG.

Metal can with original whimsical painting

of mousetrap. Gouache and ink on tin can.

508x280 mm; 20x11 inches (diameter).

Signed in full. Scattered scuffing, rubbing,

and some chips and rust spots. Recovered

near Goldberg’s home and studio in

Northport, Long Island.

[1,000/1,500]

Likely used in his studio as an umbrella stand

or trash receptacle, the can bears an amusing

and elaborate painting of the classic “Rube

Goldberg mousetrap.”As the mouse jumps up

on a seesaw to get the cheese, the other side

tips an ink jar into a fountain pen which signs

the artist’s name with a mechanical hand.
