Struss studied photography with Clarence White at
Columbia University in 1912, and later had success
as a commercial photographer. In 1919 he moved to
Hollywood and became a cinematographer. He was
nominated for an Academy Award on four different
occasions, winning in 1929 for “Sunrise.”
