Brandt’s series “Across the Ravaged Land” is the third portion of his trilogy documenting endangered
and vanishing wildlife of East Africa. Intimate and tender while also revealing the ravages wrought by
man, Brandt describes his portraits of animals as an “elegy,” and indeed each image is filled both with
love, admiration, a natural majesty, and also tinged with poignancy. Brandt only shoots medium-format
black and white film on a Pentax 67II without zoom or telephoto lenses (he uses only two fixed lenses).
