Born in New Orleans and raised in the lower Ninth Ward, John T. Scott has produced artwork
shaped largely by diverse and local African, African-American, Caribbean and Creole cultures, and
the blues and jazz musical traditions. Several of these colorful painted steel and aluminum sculptures
are on permanent display at the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. Scott’s paintings,
sculpture and prints have been featured in many national gallery and museum exhibitions, and in
1992, he was awarded the “genius” grant from the John D. and CatherineT. MacArthur Foundation.
