Karpellus, primarily known as a painter, was introduced to the world of French poster art while
studying at the Academie Julien in Paris. When he returned to Austria, he became one of the
preeminent poster artists in the field. Denscher contends that Karpellus was instrumental in “the
emergence of modern poster art in Austria” (Denscher p. 40). Denscher p. 126.
