Klinger studied art in Vienna but worked in Berlin for the printer and publisher, Hollerbaum &
Schmidt, as well as for the satiric magazine,
Lustige Blätter
. He was a prolific, versatile and inventive
graphic artist, with a style that ranged from the flat tones and strong outlining that was popular in
Germany at the time, to strictly typographic pieces and bold and daring graphic constructions. It is
evident, however, that his preferred mode of design was through caricature. We have been unable to
find another copy of this poster at auction.

The repeating motif of well-attired women was frequently employed in advertising during this era,
perhaps for the first time by Ludwig Hohlwein for Parfumerie Tochtermann in 1910. Ernst Deutsch
utilized this motif for Salamander in 1912, as did Muller in this image and anonymous artists for
various other products as well (see lot 330).
