Condition A.
In 1933, Kauffer designed seven point-of-pur-
chase posters for
Gilbey’s
, the wine and liquor
distributor. All but one were in this horizontal
format. They were each achieved using Kauffer’s
innate graphic genius, and represent the pinna-
cle of Art Deco design in the commercial field.
They combined exceptional typography and
imagery, some leaning more heavily one way
than the other. Kauffer 173.

This is the largest of the seven point-of-pur-
chase posters Kauffer designed for Gilbey’s in
1933. It is the only one in the vertical format
and the most complex, combining image and
typography, rendered via Kauffer’s ingenious use
of the airbrush. Kauffer 174 , MOMA 415.1939.
