At the beginning of the 1930s Helge Refn stud-
ied in Paris with Fernand Leger. Her time in
France lent a French touch to her work that is
uncommon in Danish posters, as most Danish
graphic artists of the era followed in the Ger-
man style. Refn designed posters for Tivoli and
two images for this coke company, selling a coal
by-product used to heat homes.

Condition B+: restoration and restored pin-holes
at edges; abrasions in image.
An unrealized project for a poster promoting a
joyful evening of jazz, comedy, drama and other
musical performances. Jouty, an otherwise
unknown artist, designed this poster, in which a
musical note, a singer’s mouth and a large ace of
hearts all take similar shape. As these were the
early years of World War II, a grim time for
Europe, it is uncertain whether such an opti-
mistic image was created for an event that
ultimately was canceled, or was in and of itself a
flight of escapist fantasy.
