Three of France’s most important poster artists, Paul Colin, Jean Carlu and Leonetto Cappiello, were
asked to design advertising for their country’s 1937 World’s Fair. For his poster, Cappiello personifies
Arts and Technology
in the form of monumental figures depicted as Art Deco statues. “Cappiello
became deeply involved in the planning for the Paris World’s Fair of 1937. He was named vice-presi-
dent of the Publicity Department for the Fair, and as such he designed the decor for the Pavilion of
Advertising, as well as preparing this poster” (Cappiello / Rennert p. 323). This is the smaller of two
