ERIC VON SCHMIDT ( 1931-2007)
162 • IN CONCERT, JOAN BAEZ &
BOB DYLAN. 1965.
21x13 inches, 54x33 cm.
Condition B+ / B: pin-holes in corners; creases
and abrasions in image; scratch in image. Thick
paper.
Von Schmidt was a folk singer himself, in addi-
tion to being an artist. He became part of the
Cambridge coffee house scene in the late 1950s
which is where he met Bob Dylan. This poster,
for a joint concert with Bob Dylan and Joan
Baez is quite scarce, as allegedly Dylan was
unhappy with the poster and it was barely used
for the tour before it was shelved. The poster is
a “blank,” meaning the concert venues and
dates were meant to be over-printed as needed.
Very few of the actual over-printed copies exist.
From an artistic point of view, the poster is a
stylistic tribute to images designed by Toulouse-
Lautrec. From a musical point of view, it is
interesting to note that Dylan is pictured with
his acoustic guitar, which he gave up shortly
thereafter in favor of his electric guitar.
