Satomi arrived in Paris in 1922 and was quickly
recognized as an exceptional talent. For a short
while he apprenticed with Cassandre in his studio,
and later went on to a successful career, working
both in France and Japan. Though forced to go
back to Japan during World War II, he returned to
Paris as soon possible, where he continued a long
and prosperous career working primarily for a big
Japanese confectionery company, but still working
on whimsical commissions such as this one.

Excoffon was a renowned French typographer
whose Chambord, Antique Olive and Mistral type-
faces are recognized throughout the world. He also
ran an advertising agency through which he repre-
sented Air France and Perrier, amongst others
prominent clients. For his posters, he often
employed brushstroke-like flourishes, or sweeps of
ink, to help evoke the subject. Here, for the Salon
Techniques Papetières et Graphiques, he combines
both his typography and his signature calligraphic
touch to promote a printing exhibition.
