The stark contrast in his landscapes pulls the viewer into this almost tangible scene, where one can imagine the prickliness of the unpicked pineapple in a vast field or the feeling of the tropical sun warming the skin with no distractions for miles.⁠

The star of this album is the portrait of Princess Kaiulani (The Last Princess), heir to the throne before the Annexation of Hawaii to the United States. Soft light brightens the princess’s face, and the peacefulness of the pose reveals much of her personality. Loved by her people and prepared to honor her country until the overthrow of the monarchy in the nineteenth century, Princess Kaiulani was seen as a symbol of the former Hawaii to natives, a beacon of hope. The October 24 Fine Books auction features a first edition of Bill W. Wilson's 'Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More than One Hundred Men Have Recovered,' 1939. ⁠

AA's "Big Book," a seminal work in the field of recovery, is considered the organization's basic text and has been translated into more than 70 languages since its original publication in 1939. The Library of Congress included the work in its "Books that Shaped America" exhibit alongside Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, and other landmark works. First edition copies of the "Big Book" are highly sought-after, especially when accompanied by the scarce dust jacket, due to its profound impact on the lives of countless recovering alcoholics, their families, and friends.⁠

Swann will present an exciting find in the October

Swann will present an exciting find in the October 24 Fine Books auction: a photo album compiled by a fellow Red Cross volunteer who served in the Ambulance Service with Ernest Hemingway during WWI. It contains unpublished images of Hemingway and his fellow volunteers from the time they shipped overseas, through their service in Italy, and includes an image of the injured Papa in his Milan hospital bed. Estimate $20,000 to $30,000.

A stated first edition, first printing association

A stated first edition, first printing association copy of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, 1960, is coming to auction in the October 24 auction of Fine Books.

The present copy is signed and inscribed to Michael and Joy Brown, the benefactors and friends who ensured Lee's freedom to write her magnum opus.

Estimate $10,000 to $15,000.
