Last Tuesday Swann welcomed Hall Rockefeller and Less Than Half to explore the photography market and the women featured in our Fine Photographs auction.

Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman elected

Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress, representing New York's 12th congressional district. In 1972, she became the first Black candidate to seek a major party's nomination. ⁠
⁠
Her extended campaign pitch was: "She's Black, and she's a woman, a catalyst to unite the women, the struggling minorities, the poor and the young who see in her a new hope." Her policy planks included her sponsorship of the Equal Rights Amendment, support for withdrawal from Vietnam, advocacy of prison reform, and a guaranteed minimum annual income. ⁠

SPECIALIST'S PICK | "James J. Williams, tasked with promoting Hawaii as a tourist destination, created an album that did just that and more. The stark contrast in his landscapes pulls the viewer into this almost tangible scene, where one can imagine the prickliness of the unpicked pineapple in a vast field or the feeling of the tropical sun warming the skin with no distractions for miles.⁠

The star of this album is the portrait of Princess Kaiulani (The Last Princess), heir to the throne before the Annexation of Hawaii to the United States. Soft light brightens the princess’s face, and the peacefulness of the pose reveals much of her personality. Loved by her people and prepared to honor her country until the overthrow of the monarchy in the nineteenth century, Princess Kaiulani was seen as a symbol of the former Hawaii to natives, a beacon of hope.
