Provenance: the Johnson Publishing Company, Inc., Chicago. Painter, illustrator and educator Sherman Beck is a Chicago native. He was an early member of the artist collective AfriCOBRA - showing in both the 1969 AfriCOBRA: Ten in Search of a Nation and 1970 AfriCOBRA II exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Beck graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed further studies at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. He worked as a commercial artist, free-lance illustrator and taught commercial art at his alma mater Dunbar High School for twenty-two years. Beck had a solo exhibition at African American Cultural Center, University of Illinois-Chicago in 2008, and a retrospective at the South Side Community Art Center in 2013. His work was recently included in AfriCOBRA 50 at Kavi Gupta Gallery in Chicago, September 28 - November 3, 2018 and AfriCOBRA: Messages to the People , Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, November 27, 2018 - March 24, 2019.
