Provenance: the Johnson Publishing Company, Inc., Chicago. Born in Biloxi, MS, Walter J. Williams, Jr. moved to Detroit in his youth. There, he studied visual art at the Meinzinger Art School, Society of Arts and Crafts and the University of Detroit. An active painter and illustrator, Williams was a member of the Michigan Academy of Arts, Sciences and Letters, and was a visual arts director and coordinator in the late 1960s. His paintings were included in a number of survey exhibitions, including the 1971-72 Black American Artists/71 organized by the Illinois Arts Council and Illinois Bell Telephone Lobby Gallery, and the 1979 Black Artists/South at the Huntsville Museum of Art, Huntsville, AL.
