Born in New Orleans and raised in the lower Ninth Ward, sculptor, painter and printmaker John Tarrell Scott produced artwork shaped largely by the diverse and local African, African- American, Caribbean and Creole cultures. Scott attended Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans and received a BA. He received his MFA from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI in 1965. Scott then returned to Xavier where he taught for 40 years. This scarce print is from Scott’s series of collagraphs on the subject of the Hebrew and Old Testament story of Jonah and the whale. Other prints from this series in the Blanche and Norman C. Francis collection at Xavier University, New Orleans were included in Circle Dance: The Art of John T. Scott , his 2005 retrospective at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Scott’s paintings, sculpture and prints have been featured in many gallery and museum exhibitions, and in 1992, he was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. [3,000/5,000]
