Provenance: the Johnson Publishing Company, Inc., Chicago. Born in Kingston, Arkansas, sculptor and painter Geraldine McCullough moved to Chicago when she was a child. McCullough attended the Art Institute of Chicago for both her undergraduate and graduate studies, receiving her BA in 1948 and her MA degree in art education in 1955. Originally trained as a painter, she adopted sculpture as her preferred medium after her husband Lester McCullough, Sr., a steel worker, introduced her to welding. Geraldine achieved international recognition with her steel and copper sculpture Phoenix , which received the George D. Widener Gold Medal for Sculpture in 1965. Her artwork has been in numerous museum exhibitions, including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Californian African American Museum, the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. [1,000/1,500]
