8 c EDWARD CARPENTER (1844-1929) Album of 112 cartes-de-visite portraits of Victorian students at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, including Edward Carpenter (signed), and others depicting an array of costumed theatrical figures, including Ellen Terry. Albumen prints, the images generallymeasuring 3 3 / 4 x2 inches, 9 1 / 2 x5 1 / 2 cm, the mounts 4x3 inches, 10x7 cm, most with a photographers’ imprint on mount verso and several with period signatures, in ink, on mount recto, and all with later, penciled caption information identifying the photographer on the album pages; 5 are by Camille Silvy. 4to, debossedmorocco, defective brass clasps; all edges gilt. 1861-65. [1,000/1,500] Carpenter was a pioneering figure associated with the Uranians, a small literary circle whose social ideals were influenced by practices in Ancient Greece, including erotic relationships between men and boys.
