It featured cultural, artistic, and political material, literary contributions such as lyric poetry, prose, and nude photography. This annual was the only cloth-bound issue and contains literary and artistic contributions by the publishers as well as Hans Bethge, Peter Hille, Ludwig Seifert, Neo Neus, Hans Unfried, Heinrich Jäger, Michelangelo, Della Robbia, Thorwaldsen, and many others. It was also very political, with strong anarchist leanings, but shifted its views to support the liberal democracy of the Weimar Republic and the Social Democratic Party. In 1933, when Adolf Hitler rose to power, Nazi leader Ernst Röhm raided Brand’s house and seized his possessions, including all material related to Der Eigene. 5
