26 c EDWARD GOREY. “It was a happy visit.” Pen and ink on onionskin. 63x102 mm; 2 1 / 2 x4 inches on slightly larger sheet. Signed “E Gorey” in left image. Corner mounted to board and framed to 7x7 1 / 2 inches. Provenance: Gotham Book Mart to present owner. [600/900] A sweet, early illustration likely created during his tenure at Doubleday, Anchor in the mid-1950s. It was at Doubleday that Gorey struggled with type and developed his characteristic calligraphic style for the numerous book jackets he designed for them. That early experimentation is evident in the lettering here. 27 c MARILEE HEYER. “The Immortals.” Together, two cover illustrations for Books 3 and 4 of “The Immortals” series by Tamora Pierce including “Emperor Mage” and “The Realms of the Gods” (New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2002; 2003). Watercolor and pencil on board. 317x229 mm; 12 1 / 2 x9 inches. Signed, titled, and described on verso. [1,000/1,500] Heyer’s colorful and detailed fantasy drawings depict Veralidaine “Daine” Sarrasri, the main character of Pierce’s quartet, “The Immortals,” who possesses “wild magic” and has the power to communicate with, heal, and shapeshift into animals. 26 27
