Sale 2507, Part I - Old Master Through Modern Prints, May 2, 2019

227  THOMAS HART BENTON Planting . Lithograph, 1939. 255x320 mm; 10x12 1 / 2 inches, full margins. Edition of 250. Signed in pencil, lower right. Published by Associated American Artists, New York. A very good, dark impression. Benton (1889-1975) created this lithograph after the same-titled painting, based on a drawing he made in southern Arkansas, and commented, “The man plows, the woman sows. Common enough scene up to very lately.” He was wistful regarding the slow disappearance of these traditional farming practices, yet stated hopefully that the “old ways don’t die easily.” Fath 28.
