Paris: En Vente au Chat Noir, 1885 [600/900] number 16 of only 50 copies on japan paper , a presentation copy for publisher and bookseller roldolphe salis from Somm and Charles de Sivry, initialed by Somm. Small 12mo, 19th-century blue cloth over marbled boards; manuscript correction to page 57, scattered light creasing, a few minor worm holes (affecting two letters of text on pg 20), samples a bit loose but intact, contents otherwise clean and bright. Amsterdam: J. D. Gertner, 1843 [400/600] first edition of a scarce women ’ s pattern book for knitting and lacemaking . While three copies of the second and fourth editions (1844-45) are held in Dutch and American institutions, no copy of this edition can be traced. The examples in the book are supplied by a follower of the instructions offered, which includes various stitches and designs. Considered to be the among the earliest, if not the first, book on the subject. 72 73
